What is an IEP?

Each public school child who receives special education and related services must have an Individualized Education Program (IEP)

    An Individualized Education Program (IEP) describes the educational program that has been designed to meet that child's unique needs.

    The IEP creates an opportunity for teachers, parents, school administrators, related services personnel, and students (when age appropriate) to work together to improve educational results for children with disabilities. The IEP is the cornerstone of a quality education for each child with a disability.
  • The Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a legally binding document.
    The Individual Education Program/Plan (IEP) Simply put, an IEP is a written plan that will describe the program(s) and special services the student requires to be successful.
     It is a plan that ensures that proper programming is in place to help the student with special needs to be successful at school.
  • It is a working document that will be modified usually each term based on the ongoing needs of the student.
  • The IEP is developed collaboratively by school staff and parents as well as medical staff if appropriate.
  • An IEP will focus on social, academic and independence needs (daily living) depending on the area of need.
  • It may have one or all three components addressed
